Empowering women, transforming lives:
Immaculée’s story
In Kigali, Rwanda, change often begins in unexpected ways. For Immaculée Nyiransengimana, Customer Relationship Manager at I&K, it began with the chance to work in a company that not only delivers food but also opens doors for women to transform their lives.
“Before this job, I stayed at home all day” she recalls. “Now, I can support my family, save money, and even buy land. It has completely changed my life.”
Breaking traditional barriers
I&K has been quietly transforming lives. What started just three years ago as a small egg delivery business using bicycles has now grown, with the support of the BOOST project, into a thriving enterprise with 15 employees, expanding its fleet of electric bikes and bringing nutritious food across the city.
Among these employees, I&K prioritizes hiring women, recognizing both their potential and their challenges.
“When a woman with a baby comes asking for work, we know how hard it is to turn her away,” Immaculée explains. “We understand her needs and believe in her abilities. That’s why we give her a chance.”
This approach has not only created jobs but also challenged outdated ideas about what women can do. “Some people used to think women would slow down operations,” she says. “But today, we’ve proven we can be just as fast, efficient, and reliable as men. When women are healthy and given the opportunity, we perform equally well.”
Confidence, independence, and hope
The company’s plan is to increase its workforce to more than 60 employees as it opens new branches in Kicukiro, Gikondo, and Kimisagara. With these big steps come more opportunities for women to demonstrate their abilities and play a key role in Kigali’s sustainable mobility.
For Immaculée, the most valuable change has been gaining confidence and independence. “I’m no longer dependent only on my husband’s income. Together, we can build a better future for our family. Soon, we’ll move from renting to owning our own home.”
Her story has inspired others too. Women in her community see her determination and start to believe in their own possibilities. “Many women now come to us asking for jobs,” she says. “They see that it’s possible to work, grow, and contribute to their families.”
A message to other women
Through her journey, Immaculée has learned that even small opportunities can become life-changing. She now dreams of starting her own business one day, building on the skills and confidence she has gained.
Her message to other women is simple:
“Believe in yourself. Every job, no matter how small, can lead to something greater. It’s not about how others see the work—it’s about the independence and future it gives you.”
